Favicon

Favicon

A Favicon, which is short for ‘favorites icon’, is generally a 16x16 image that is used to represent your website when it is open on a tab of a web browser. Its main purpose is to allow the user to identify different websites when there are multiple tabs open, making it easier to navigate between them. Besides on open tabs, favicons can be seen on the bookmark drop-down menu, history drop-down menu, the bookmark bar, the search bar, the search bar recommendations, and in-browser history.

  • It makes the website more legitimate and credible.
  • They can play a role in boosting search ranking. 
  • It makes things easier for users as it enables them to identify websites easily. 

How to Create a Favicon 

To make a favicon for your website you can design a logo yourself or hire a professional designer to do it for you. 

There are design programs and tools that you can use to create one on your own if you choose to do so.  There is also the option of using your existing logo or choosing from ready-made favicons from databases like Findicons and IconJ. 

Features of a Good Favicon 

  1. It is simple and easy to remember. 
  2. It should represent what your business is about.
  3. It should use contrasting colors to make it more recognizable. 
  4. It is within the size limits specified by the browser. (16x16 is accepted by all, but different dimensions are accepted by different browsers)
