Shopify released a one page checkout experience that promises to make the checkout flow faster

Here’s a guide on Shopify one page checkout and how to achieve the full benefit of its features.

What is Shopify one page checkout?

Shopify has designed the one page checkout layout to be more streamlined and optimized for speed and conversion.

Store owners can tailor the visual aspects of a one page checkout to align with their brands through custom fonts, favicons, and colors.

They can also extend capabilities such as delivery date pickers or customized shipping options through third-party applications.

How to Use Shopify One Page Checkout Correctly for a Faster Experience

1. Leverage Shop Pay

Shop Pay is the ultimate ace card in Shopify’s bag of tricks for more conversions.

On its landing page, Shopify promotes the payment option as an alternative to guest checkout.

Statistics show that on average, 43% of buyers already trust and use Shop Pay as their preferred checkout method.

Benefits of Shop Pay for a fast one page checkout process:

✔️ Shop Pay securely stores and encrypts your buyers' shipping and billing information, providing a fast and convenient one-tap checkout.

✔️ Stores can enable monthly interest-free installments of up to 24 months

✔️ Make it easy for repeat customers to check out quickly as the app automatically remembers and applies their payment information

✔️ Create Shop Pay CTA buttons for more than just your Shopify store as well as through social channels like Google, Instagram, and Facebook.

✔️ Shop Pay also supports multiple languages, which takes us to our next point.

2. Customize languages to speed up one page checkout

When customers can’t find a product that meets their needs in local or country-level stores, they don’t give up.

Research shows, 57% of online shoppers like to shop internationally.

However, many consumers continue to have a poor opinion of the delivery experience for international eCommerce and are less forgiving if things go wrong.

Shopping in a language they are familiar with can help to assure them about their purchases.

Before you get started –

✔️ Check if your shop theme is compatible with selling in multiple languages

✔️ Edit the default language of your online store and add other languages so that customers can select their preferred language.

✔️ If the language that you want isn't available, or if you want to edit the default translations, then create original translations.

Here’s how can you edit and add multiple languages to Shopify one page checkout:

Step 1: From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Languages.

Step 2: Click Add Language.

Step 3: Choose a language from the drop-down menu, then click Add.

Step 4:Select an active market to add your language to.

Step 5: Do either of the following:

  • Use the Translate & Adapt app to import your translated content into Shopify.
  • Visit the Shopify App Store and install a translation app to your store. Follow the steps in the app to translate your online store's content and publish new languages.

Step 6: Click Preview to view different languages in your online store. You can preview both published and unpublished languages.

Step 7: From Shopify admin, go to Settings > Languages.

Step 8: In Unpublished languages, click Publish beside the language that you want to make available to customers in your store.

Step 9: Click Save.

Adding a language only adds translations in supported languages to supported themes and checkouts. If you want to add translations to other store content, then you need to import translations or use an app.

3. Pre-fill customer information

In brick-and-mortar stores, most customers are accustomed to paying with a single tap.

On online stores, any friction such as another field to fill out or a high shipping price can result in abandoned checkouts and lost sales.

Stellar Eats, a health food brand upgraded to Shopify one page checkout after seeing many abandoned carts.

Consequently, the online store improved its online conversion rate by 3.5% and is on track to increase revenue.

“One page checkout is a game changer for reducing friction—especially with shipping automatically calculated right in front of you,” explains Emma Kula, Stellar Eats' Co-Founder, and Chief Product Officer.

4. Offer split payments

Global buy now, pay later transactions are projected to increase by nearly 450 billion USD between 2021 and 2026.

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) payment allows shoppers to pay a certain percentage of the overall purchase price, and then pay off the rest in installments over a selected period of time.

If a customer can't pay for their whole order, then Shopify one page checkout lets store owners accept partial payments.

Hemlock and Oak, a stationery brand, enabled spilt payments on pre-orders to nudge shoppers to make quick purchases.

This resulted in a 7% increase in the store’s overall conversion rate.

5. Auto-update details on one page checkout

Hidden costs are the number one reason why shoppers abandon carts.

Through Shopify’s one page checkout, the order summary and pricing is dynamically updated according to a shopper’s actions.

For instance, when shoppers input information like promo codes, coupons, shipping addresses, and shipping methods, the shipping and prices are automatically updated.

Similarly, if shoppers edit products, it gets reflected in the order summary.

6. Enable third-party apps

While it might sound like Shopify one checkout page is restrictive, you can enable 3rd party apps to optimize for more conversions.

Apps can help to collect additional information about buyer preference at checkout.

Here are various ways 3rd part extension apps can help:

  • personalize recommendations,
  • add subscriptions,
  • add loyalty program options,
  • provide pickup options,
  • offer fields for gift messages
  • enable customized discounts
  • combine discount codes, and
  • populate shipping rates based on customer locations.

7. Design for mobile

Shopify stores naturally want customers to add customer information through relevant forms on the checkout page.

However, when it comes to mobile checkout optimization, it’s best to focus on payment ease.

For instance, feature express checkout options before the form fields.

Glossier introduces their information fields after they’ve displayed the express checkout options.

1. What are the benefits of Shopify one page checkout?

Shopify one page checkout is a checkout process that allows customers to complete their purchase on a single page.

This can be beneficial for both businesses and customers.

Benefits of Shopify one page checkout for stores include:

✔️ An increase in conversion rates as customers are more likely to complete a purchase if they don't have to leave the page they're on.

✔️ Reduction in cart abandonment as customers are less likely to abandon their cart if they can complete their purchase quickly and easily.

✔️ A marked improvement in customer experience where customers can conveniently complete their purchase in one step.

Benefits of Shopify one page checkout for customers include:

✔️ Customers can complete their purchase quickly and easily without having to navigate multiple pages.

✔️ Validate a purchase as shoppers can see the total cost of their purchase before they commit to it.

✔️ Assure customers that their personal information is safe when they checkout on a secure page.

2. One page vs. multi-page checkout

One page checkouts are simpler and faster for customers to complete, as they only have to provide their information once.

This can lead to higher conversion rates, as customers are less likely to abandon their carts if they can complete the checkout process quickly and easily.

However, one page checkouts cannot collect a lot of customer information.

This can make it difficult for stores to personalize the customer experience or target customers with relevant marketing campaigns.

On the other hand, multi-page checkouts have longer checkout times and a higher risk of customers abandoning their carts.

However, multi-page checkouts gather more information from customers that can help to personalize the experience even after checkout.

So, which should you enable?

Ultimately, the best type of checkout for an online store depends on the goals and needs of its customers.
